Living in South Orange, New Jersey
So, you are thinking of making a move to the suburbs but you don't want to lose all of your street cred and are wondering what living in South Orange is like. Is S. Orange the town for you? As a 20 year resident of Maplewood/S. Orange, let me point out a few reasons why you should look no further. South Orange, NJ is truly one of the best NJ towns around to live in. Many home buyers seem to be beginning their home search in nearby Maplewood, mostly because there is a lot of "buzz" around Maplewood currently. I always encourage them to expand their search to include S. Orange. Maplewood and S. Orange are, in essence, one community and they share a school system. In the end, most buyers will be shopping for a home in both Maplewood and S. Orange.
First of all, S. Orange is not a boring place to live. There is a great variety of people here in different professions which adds a layer of richness to the community.
Many people choose S. Orange because of the quick commute to Manhattan-- the train ride along NJ Transit's MidTown Direct Line is less than 30 minutes. There is also train service to Hoboken where you can catch the ferry or take the PATH train to your final destination. S. Orange is about a 20-25 minute drive to Newark Airport so if you travel a lot for business or pleasure it's easy to get to and from the airport.
The homes in S. Orange never get boring either. There are many styles, ranging from Tudors, to Victorians, Contemporary, Colonials and Mid Century ranch homes. The quality of the housing stock is unsurpassed. There is also a range of size and price. Generally homes range from the $300s to $2 million range. The average home sale price in 2015 is around $625,000. There are some rental and condo options but mostly it's a single family town.
There are a lot of cool things happening here. The downtown keeps improving. There have been some great new additions to the downtown like the South Orange Performing Arts Center (SOPAC), Ashley Gourmet Market, 2 new rental buildings and many special promotional events. The park has been upgraded with a nice new walking path along the river. Neighborhoods that were previously overlooked, like Seton Village, near Seton Hall, have become "hot". The historic fire station was restored and the old town hall is being renovated and will be a new catering facility.
Some of my favorite places in S. Orange are:
- South Orange Performing Arts Center is a modern arts center with a 440 seat auditorium, a dance studio and five movie theaters. Comedians and recording artists perform here, and the arts center hosts Seton Hall University Arts Council performances.
- The Orange Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1880 as one of the first tennis clubs in the United States. The club has 10 artificial turf courts, 10 grass courts and five platform tennis courts.
